FCS Appetiser & Conditioner
Feeding chat ... by Rosie Fearnley
Horses are all different as are everyone’s views on feeding them! A lot of people come to our yard and say how well my two Arabs look – one aged 20 and one aged 30+ - and ask how I feed them. Here are some thoughts:-
I believe in feeding good quality forage. I use haylage as I know it is dust free and there is no waste. In my experience even hay that was good quality when made and stored in my hay shed, lost quality to the point where I wasn’t happy to feed it into the new year.
Quantity wise – I feed 4kg (3/4 of my hay net) at night with my horses out to grass during the day. In the depths of winter when my little field (2/3 of an acre) gets too muddy, they stand in all day and they have an additional 2kg each in the morning.
I only have time to ride at weekends – about 1 ½ hours Saturday and Sunday
mornings. Being an Arab, my 20 year old is very skittish so she has minimum
extras to her forage. I feed her a double handful of Graze-On Gold Blend, 100ml of Cider Vinegar and 1 ½ mugs of an appetiser and conditioner which I blend myself (see
below). For my 30+ mare Sharama (on front of catalogue), I supplement her haylage with a soaked mixture of sugarbeet pulp and grass nuts, 4 double handfuls of Graze-On, 2 double handfuls of Graze-On Gold Blend, 100ml Cider Vinegar and 1 ½ mugs of my
appetiser and conditioner.
